Squirrelpox Virus

While competition for food places red squirrels under constant pressure, squirrelpox virus is perhaps the single greatest reason why populations collapse so rapidly once grey squirrels arrive.

The virus is carried naturally by many grey squirrels without causing serious illness. They have evolved alongside it over thousands of years and possess a natural resistance, meaning infected animals often show little or no outward signs of disease. As a result, apparently healthy grey squirrels can unknowingly spread the virus wherever they go.

For red squirrels, however, the situation is very different.

Having never evolved alongside squirrelpox, red squirrels possess virtually no natural immunity. Once infected, the disease progresses rapidly and is almost always fatal.
